What's Work?

My life is going to seem boring because this weekend, I didn’t do really anything new to me. If I were to talk about something it would probably be about how I got my old job back because I quit for college and I worked this Saturday because I'm running low on money and I need to start working to get money. So on Saturday I went to work at 7 AM and as always my boss doesn’t show up till 730 and I lose five dollars because of him. Then I worked, during work I did a whole bunch of things different at work. At work it was only me and my friend Vito who got the job a few weeks ago because of me. I was sort of the boss of him which was weird, my boss told me to tell him what to do I should know by now what needs to be done so I gave him stuff to do and not to be mean it felt good though. I also was moving lumber across the shop and that was fun. After that I spent my time cutting metal bracket holders and I never used a saw there before because when I worked for them I was under 18 so I couldn’t touch the machines because I wasn’t an adult. If you know what a metal cutter does it basically heats up the metal with a blade with metal on it and sparks fly everywhere. At first it was scary because sometimes a spark would hit my arm and it would hurt. But after a while I got the hang of it I was doing pretty well with cutting. I think I probably cut 300 before I broke the blade by going down too fast. That was scary because the metal actually goes through the blade and almost spirals around it. I then had my boss replace the blade and after about 20 cuts with that, I broke the blade again. I gave up after because I only had about 3 more pieces to cut so I didn’t cut those it wasn’t a big deal. After that I spent the rest of the day I was sorting out metal brackets which was annoying because they are all different some how and I could never find out where I have to put them and they give me a headache. After that I got ready to leave and did so clocking out and leaving. Going to work isn’t new its just been a while which is why I started to write about me going to work but at work I did new things I’ve never done before. I'm happy to be working again now though because I’ve been spending a lot of money on stuff and I need an income so I can keep spotify. I also need money because its always good if you have some money in your pocket just incase you need something. Word.

My View on Service.

“Service.” There are many different definitions for this word but they all tie into one thing, and that is doing something to help somebody else or doing something in general. Community service is when you do something for the community to make it a better place. Servicing somebody is when you help somebody. With all that being said I'm the type of person who believes that service of any type is good but to me my favorite would have to be animal service. I have the biggest soft side for animals especially cats and dogs. When I did the volunteer match and animal one came up and it said to adopt these animals, and I really wish I could just adopt them all I feel so bad for animals who need homes. For community service week I cleaned up my grandfathers yard as well as three of his neighbors because they are all old. And by clean up I mean mow the lawn, weed whack, trim the hedges, you name it, I did it. And I did it all for free. My part in this week goes perfect with community service week because I didn’t have to clean 4 yards that day, I was going to just do my grandfathers and then the neighbors kept asking me and I couldn’t say no to them so I did theirs too and I refused payment to because I don’t like taking peoples money. One place I see a need and I think a lot of commuters will agree with me on this. I think that we need a trash pick up day for southern itself. I was walking down to the gas station the other day and I was looking on the ground near Neff hall and the parking garage and I saw cigarette butts everywhere and I saw empty beer cans all throughout campus and normally I wouldn’t care what people do with their trash but this is where I live. I don’t want to be walking around in a nasty pile of cigarette butts and beer cans. What really got me angry was the fact that there were big dumpsters literally 3 seconds away from the cans. I think the impact we could have on people by going down to New Haven and cleaning the neighborhood’s up is, people would see how nice the place they live in looks when its clean, so they will either stop littering or they will clean up after other people who don’t get it yet. I also think that if this community service thing was mandatory, everybody who liters on campus would see how actually good they got it here, and how they shouldn’t dirty the place up because this place represents them. If we had prospect freshman for next year coming down here to see the school right now we would be screwed. I would never come here if I saw what I already seen here. It’s disgusting. I think if they go down to the community service project then they will think twice about littering.

"If you ain't first your last"

This quote is from Will Ferrell who played Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights, a movie that is one of my favorite movies all time. Now I know Ricky Bobby was dumb in that movie or he at least acted like it I still think that this quote should really be taken to heart here. I think the only way you should act towards a goal is to say that if your not first your last. If you do that you’re basically ruling out any other outcome other than success. We all know that there are other places to be in like 2nd or 3rd etc.  But when you set a goal you want to achieve it and be 1st and nowhere else. Or when you are in a competition or a race you want to be first and you just don’t feel as good as you would if you got second. Granted sometimes not being first still isn’t really a bad thing like in my DECA competition I didn’t win 1st place in states I lost to two girls from my school who we trash talked constantly saying that we would beat them. I got 2nd place in states but we did end up beating them there. And we also didn’t get first place in nationals we got 12th. Even though we didn’t get 1st place we still got 12th place out of a lot of countries like, all of North America, China, some countries in Europe and Japan. That is still pretty good but its not as good as if we won first out of all them. I know what your thinking I talk about DECA a lot I'm sorry it was just the best time in my high school career and I had so much fun with it. This quote is how I try to keep living my life at anything I always want to be at the top of everything. Weather its school, sports, and work. I always want to win and even in life. I want to be successful in my life and I do not want to settle for anything other than successful because to me, that is coming in first place. I want to live comfortably with a family a beautiful wife and kids and I want to not have any worry with money or bills I want to have enough money I need to live off of and have fun while I am doing it. With all that being said I hope to come in first in college and graduate with the best degree I can and start my chicken wing truck and be successful with my truck. That is my life plan and I encourage you to use this quote as a guide for your life too.

Playing Sports in College

Now I know what you're thinking, if you play a sport and you are able to play it in college why not! Well, I think differently due to recent history with sports and school for me. In high school I played baseball and basketball. For some reason i found it really hard to balance baseball and basketball and school work. So i had to quit. Once I had quit my grades were really good and I loved it. I always got my work done no matter what. I took sophomore year off from sports to keep up the good grades and then gave it one more shot during junior year. Junior year is the hardest year in high school and i was dumb for even trying. My grades slipped from a b average to a d average and that was not cutting it. So yet again I quit and I decided to just worry about school work and got my grades back up and had a successful high school career. That is the reason to why I do not want to risk getting bad grades for sports. No offense to people who do play sports but I’m already horrible at managing my time why would I add on more time taken up by sports. Now I am supposed to think of ways I can think about this problem critically but the thing is, I already thought about this problem a lot and I made my decision not to play any sports for Southern Connecticut State University. When I was thinking on what I should do I said that maybe I could try to do it just once and really try to focus and get all my work done because I really wanted to play sports still because I love it but I didn’t want to even put my self in the position to fail or get bad grades. I will however play intramurals for fun because I still want to play the sport but with not as much commitment as school organized sports. With that being said, I will only play intramural sports at Southern and not play regular school sports.

More about Mark Morrissey

Hi I am Mark Morrissey, being a college student to me is balancing good grades, while making tons of new friends, and being the nicest person you can be. In college I want all of that and then some. I expect to learn a lot of new things and become a smarter individual this year and the next years at Southern Connecticut State University. Another goal I have for myself is to get a degree in business administration and start my own business. That is why I decided to go to college.

When I was in high school I was in a group called DECA. DECA is a marketing group that is world wide. I competed with project business plans in Connecticut junior and senior year and I won both years. For the first year I went to Salt Lake City, Utah. For the second year I went to Anaheim, California.

Both years i had fantastic business plans and i would like to start one of them eventually and make a lot of money and become really successful in life. My second idea which was a chicken wing food truck won me 12th place in the whole world. That is the business I really want to start. I presented my idea to an investor and he said that if i was 21 he would seriously consider giving me a business loan. I hope this college education I am getting will help me start this business of mine.

That is all I really have to say i am excited that i chose southern i so far i like all my teachers!
